Lee Miller: una vida entre surrealismo, moda y guerra

Elizabeth “Lee” Miller (1907-1977) nació en Poughkeepsie, Estado de Nueva York. Desde niña mostró una fascinación por la fotografía: su padre tenía aficiones fotográficas, lo que le permitió conocer algo del proceso y manejarse con cámaras desde muy joven. 

Su infancia, sin embargo, no fue exenta de dolor: sufrió abuso sexual siendo niña, lo que marcó muchas de sus emociones y percepciones posteriores. 

Ya de joven se dedicó al mundo de la moda. A los 19 años, comenzó como modelo para Vogue, y luego viajó a París, donde conoció a Man Ray; con él colaboró, aprendió, fue su musa e inició su carrera tras la cámara, experimentando con técnicas como la solarización. 

Hacia 1934 se casó con Aziz Eloui Bey y vivió en Egipto, capturando paisajes, ruinas y escenas desérticas que reflejan tanto su viaje exterior como interior. 

Con el estallido de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, Lee Miller se asentó en Londres. Pronto se convirtió en corresponsal de guerra acreditada para Vogue. Documentó el Blitz, hospitales de campaña, la liberación de París, y fue una de las primeras fotógrafas en retratar los horrores de Dachau y Buchenwald. 

Una de sus fotografías más simbólicas es la tomada en Munich, en 1945: ella misma en la bañera de Hitler, con sus botas cubiertas de barro del campo de concentración. Esa imagen sintetiza su combinación de testimonio, ironía y denuncia. 

Tras la guerra, Lee vivió una vida más retirada en Inglaterra, casándose con el artista Roland Penrose, con quien tuvo un hijo, Antony Penrose. 

Con la gran cantidad de fotografías, negativos y documentos que acumuló, muchas quedaron olvidadas tras su muerte hasta que su hijo las rescató y promovió su legado.

Estilísticamente, su obra es poderosa no sólo por lo que muestra, sino por cómo lo muestra: mezcla de lo bello y lo trágico, Surrealismo, juego de luces y sombras, una mirada que provoca. No se conformó con la estética pura de la moda; usó esa formación para capturar momentos extremos, escenas cotidianas alteradas por guerra, política, relaciones, y también para retratar artistas, amigos, escritores.
